چکیده

This paper presents a non-technical, user oriented introduction into P-SHIQ(D)— an expressive formalism that allows modelers to incorporate probabilistic background knowledge in OWL ontologies. Instead of providing formal description of the language, its syntax, semantics, and reasoning procedures, we explain the basic principles, potentially useful practices and pitfalls of probabilistic modeling. The goal of the paper is to present P-SHIQ(D) and the reasoning tools, such as Pronto, in an accessible form to encourage their usage in practical applications. We describe features and benefits of P-SHIQ(D) using examples from the HealthCare and Life Sciences domain including the prototype of a probabilistic ontology for breast cancer risk assessment.

Optimization and Evaluation of Reasoning in Probabilistic Description Logic: Towards a Systematic Approach

This paper describes the first steps towards developing a methodology for testing and evaluating the performance of reasoners for the probabilistic description logic P-SHIQ(D). Since it is a new formalism for handling uncertainty in DL ontologies, no such methodology has been proposed. There are no sufficiently large probabilistic ontologies to be used as test suites. In addition, since the rea...

Relationships Between Probabilistic Description and First-Order Logics

This paper analyzes the probabilistic description logic P-SHIQ as a fragment of first-order probabilistic logic (FOPL). P-SHIQ was suggested as a language that is capable of representing and reasoning about different kinds of uncertainty in ontologies, namely generic probabilistic relationships between concepts and probabilistic facts about individuals. However, some semantic properties of P-SH...

On Correspondences between Probabilistic First-Order and Description Logics

This paper analyzes the probabilistic description logic PSHIQ by looking at it as a fragment of probabilistic first-order logic with semantics based on possible worlds. We argue that this is an appropriate way of investigating its properties and developing extensions. We show how the previously made arguments about different types of first-order probabilistic semantics apply to P-SHIQ. This app...

Automatic Generation of Probabilistic Ontologies from UMP-ST Model

The Uncertainty Modeling Process for Semantic Technologies (UMP-ST) is an incremental and iterative approach that covers the difficulty in maintaining and evolving existing POs [5]. It is a general methodology for the majority of the existing semantic technologies which support uncertainty. One of them is the Probabilistic OWL (PR-OWL), which is a language for representing Multi-Entity Bayesian...

Modelsaz: An Object-Oriented Computer-Aided Modeling Environment

Modeling and simulation of processing plants are widely used in industry. Construction of a mathematical model for a plant is a time-consuming and error-prone task. In light of extensive advancements in computer science (both hardware and software), computers are becoming a necessary instrument in industrial activities. Many software tools for modeling, simulation and optimization of proces...
